2 - Carding Mill Valley

Carding Mill Valley photo, John Greenwood Landscape Photography

This photograph was taken from one of the hills on the Long Mynd. Carding Mill Valley is cared for by the National Trust.

The photo was taken late in the afternoon in February as the sun was setting creating a beautiful orange glow which was further enhanced by the use of a polarising filter. The hawthorn tree was positioned so that the sunlit branches encroached on the shadow cast by another hill to balance the photograph. The low winter sun did not rise high throughout the day therefore the snow on the north facing hills did not melt which helped to reflect the light and bring some detail to the shadows. To make the exposure a reading was taken from the sunlit grass then opened up by one stop.
